Singapore - purchases and Straits Times listings

Between 1966 and 1973, Singapore purchased 98 of the 108 missing episodes. It is interesting to consider that many episodes were purchased out of sequence. For example, Singapore purchased many Troughton stories in the late 60s before they purchased The Tenth Planet in 1972.

Television Singapura;

Here are a couple of listings from The Straits Times, 1966.

Thanks to Richard Molesworth for his excellent mistxx document - the known purchase dates helped to narrow the search considerably.

The Web Planet and the first three episdoes of The Crusade were broadcast on Saturdays. However, episode 4 of The Crusade (The Warlords) was changed to a Friday broadcast for some reason. Moonstrike filled the Saturday slot on 10 Sept 1966. The following weeks, Dr Kildare. Interesting to see some of the other shows Television Singapura were broadcasting in 1966. Before The Wheel of Fortune...The New Casper Cartoon Show. They also showed The Black and White Minstrel show and Bewitched.

Television Singapura changed their schedules a fair bit. So far we have discovered that Dr Who was screened on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The time slot was all over the place with episodes going out as early as 3:25pm and as late as 6:55pm.

Sometimes The Straits Times would list the episode title, sometimes they wouldn't.

At some point in the 1970s Television Singapura switched from showing Dr Who on Channel 5 to Channel 8. Here are a couple of Straits Times listings from March 1973. The only known purchase dates we have for 1973 are as follows;

Yes, Singapore did get its eps in a very bizarre order!

The channel that Who screened on switched from 5 to 8 from 13 Feb 1969, then back to 5 from 26 Feb 1970, then to 8 again from 9 Oct 1972, where it stayed till the last ever ep (Planet of the Daleks 6) aired on 6 June 1974.

It's amazing that so many stories were broadcast in Singapore if their presentation was so totally scrambled. How could any viewer figure out what the show was supposed to be about? The Gunfighters and Terror of the Autons don't resemble each other much.

It really isn't *that* odd, though, when you consider that Singapore played the most recent eps - eg Seasons Six through Ten - within one to two years of the UK broadcasts, and when each 'brand new' season ended, the RTS would play the old 1960s eps.

It's a bit like modern TV, really, in which repeats would play between first run episodes. Except that in this case the 'repeats' weren't actually new eps.

Back in the mid-80s, TVNZ played a 'repeat run' spanning Seasons 7 through Nineteen, although many Pertwee stories were not repeats at all as they'd never played in NZ before.
